Hair Care
Properly taking care of the hair extensions is
KEY in getting them to look their best and
last the longest!
DID YOU KNOW,
Proper hair extension care can cut the cost
down majorly. Nano hair extensions typically
last 9-12 months or longer with proper care.
It’
s very important to educate your clients
and/or yourself with proper hair care, to
ensure you get the full life span of the hair
Why is Hair care so important?
This a simple, yet an overlooked step that can protect not just your client but also YOU and your reputation.
No matter how flawless and perfect you installation is on your hair, if you don‘t know the aftercare, their/ your investment will not last long, orworse, it’ll cause further damage to the natural hair, leaving a very unhappy client.
So do yourself a favor, and Always Educate yourself & client, discuss the
pros and cons, you will want to discuss the cons incase they decide not to
follow your after care instructions, they understand the consequences.
I also have created a very detailed “client instruction card” to give to every
new client to help yourself & clients. These cards literally have it down to
the nitty – gritty details of how to take care of their extensions. You will still
want to ensure you are going over one on one to educate your clients as
well, as people retain the information in different ways!
HAIR CARE DO
HAIR EXTENSION MUSTS:
- Use argan oil to add moisture, often
Always use a heat protector after washing. - Plastic wet brushes
Brush hair 2x a day
Always blow dry your bonds (the root). - Use sulphate free products.
- Leave in conditioner are highly recommended.
- Separate your strands once a week if matting occurs
contact extension technician. - Condition the ends of your hair every 2 days
HAIR CARE DON'T
HAIR EXTENSION DO NOT :
- Do not go to bed with wet hair, this will cause serious matting
- Do not apply oil to base of head, this will cause slippage
- Do not apply heat more than 2 to 3 times a week, this will
shorten life span of extensions. - Avoid melting bonds, section when using heat tools, this will
damage the natural hair and wreck extension strand. - Do not aggressively rub the hair when washing
- Caution when using purple shampoo, best to mix with regular
shampoo to dull down colour, this will dry out extensions - Do not colour your hair with extensions in, this will damage
your natural hair
EXTENSION SLIPPAGE
What is a normal amount of slippage during maintenance appointments?
3 to 5 strands is normal to lose. If clients are losing more than 5 strands they should contact
you.
Why does this happen? Due to the small size of the nano bead, it is very rare you would not
have any slip out with this method.
If clients are loosing a lot of strands review a few things –
- Are clients applying any oil and hair treatments to their scalp?
- Make sure they didn’t use oil or any products on their hair before you did your install
- Are clients brushing their hair from the bottom up?
- Are they using a wet/plastic brush? Metal tip brushes can pull extensions out.
- Has the client colours their hair, the chemicals can break down the bead.
- Review your sections, maybe need to try bigger sections in the clients hair
- Your bead may also not be clamped down hard enough.
- Did they go past there recommended maintenance appointment?
SUNSCREEN AND EXTENSIONS
Does it matter what sunscreen you wear when you have extensions?
YES IT DOES MATTER!!!
No we are not directly applying the sun screen to our hair but we are putting it on our body which our hair touches and yes it will affect the
colour of your extensions especially!
Let’s take a closer look, so you know what sunscreen is safest for you and your clients hair investment!
There are two types of sunscreen ingredients that can help protect your skin from UV rays:
Physical barriers (aka mineral sunscreen)
Chemical barriers (aka chemical sunscreen)
THE LOWDOWN
Mineral sunscreen – Mineral sunscreens are SPFs that manually block the sun and UV rays by creating a barrier on the skin. The two
ingredients used to create a physical sunscreen are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Think of them like a reflecting plane of glass: some of the
rays hit the SPF and bounce off, shielding the skin below from damage.
Chemical Sunscreens – Chemical sunscreens come in more variety, and so they tend to show up in more products. The chemicals like
oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone are found in these chemical sunscreens. This sunscreen then works by penetrating the
top layers of the skin to absorb damaging UV rays before they harm your skin. This chemical reaction causes the discolorations in your hair

SULFATE FREE
WHY SULFATE FREE IS BEST – We need to make sure we are using Sulfate free products on our clients, as well as informing them of the importance of using sulfate free products at home.
Sulfates are known to strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp, leaving your hair dry and brittle. If clients are having issues with irritation, dandruff or bad breakage, switching to sulfate free products can help reduce these issues. You especially want to avoid sulfate shampoos if you have sensitive skin or a skin condition such as rosacea.
Sulfate free shampoo and products is the way to go for healthier – shinier hair.
MATTING
It is a good idea to remind your clients to separate their extensions often, and if they notice matting to contact you asap. You will want to try and get the client in as soon as possible as matting can spread fast and cause futher issues the longer it is left.
This is a good time to do a review as to what could have caused this
- Did the client go to bed with wet hair?
- Are they properly drying their bonds after showering?
- Is this only in the spots they are sleeping?
- Are they brushing their hair often?
- Are they wearing their hair up or in a ponytail while sleeping?
HOW TO DEAL WITH MATTING
When working through the matting you will want to remember this can be
extremely painful to clients. You will want to start by:
- Removing all the extensions.
- Spray argan oil onto the matted spots and massage gentle with your fingers
- You then will want to take the metal tip if your comb and poke holes into the matted spots
- Gently use your fingers to pull apart matts, keep doing these two steps over and over.
- You can gently use the comb to try and bush some of the shed out as well starting at the bottom.
- Extreme cases you will do the best you can and ask the client to use oil and conditioner in the shower and let them try and work through it a bit if they are finding it too uncomfortable and painful.
- If it is extremely bad recommend the client take a break, then if client wants to reinstall at a later date, book their maintenance appointment in sooner and start back by adding less hair in and even leaving spaces
HAIR LOSS & SHED
Hair loss can happen for many reasons but let’s start with the facts.
We shed 50 to 100 hairs a day!
If your client loses 50 – 100 hairs a day that is:
350 strands – 700 strands of hair a week.
2,450 strands – 4,900 strands per maintenance appointment.
You will want to make sure to inform your clients of the hair shed at the consultation or during the first install, to mentally prepare them ahead of time of the amount of hair they will see come out. Due to the bead being clamped in with the natural hair there is no where
for the natural shed to go. When the client comes in for maintenance you will be brushing out 7 weeks worth of natural shed and product build up, this can look alarming to clients.
TRACTION ALOPECIA (AL-OH-PEE-SHA)
The term alopecia refers to hair loss. Traction alopecia is hair loss that’s caused by repeatedly pulling on your hair. You can develop traction alopecia if you often wear your hair in a tight ponytail, bun, or braids, especially if you use chemicals or heat on your hair.
Early on, traction alopecia might show up as little bumps on your scalp that look like pimples. As the condition progresses, the main symptom is missing and broken hairs. The hairs along the front and sides of your scalp are most often affected. However, you may also notice hair loss on other areas of your scalp, depending on your hairstyle.
In addition to hair loss, traction alopecia can cause these symptoms:
- Redness of the scalp
- Bumps
- Soreness or stinging of your scalp
- Itching
- Scaling
- Folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles)
- Pus-filled blisters on your scalp
Eventually, the hair follicles can become so damaged and scarred that they can’t produce new hair
TRACTION ALOPECIA
What causes traction alopecia? you develop traction alopecia from
wearing your hair pulled too tight. Pulling on the hair repeatedly
loosens the hair shaft in its follicle.
For example, you might lose hair if you often:
pull your hair back into a tight ponytail or bun
wear tight braids, cornrows, or dreadlocks
use hair extensions or weaves
put your hair up in rollers overnight
Traction alopecia can be reversed if you stop pulling your hair back.
But if you don’t intervene soon enough, the hair loss may be
permanent. If your client is starting to experience any issues or
symptoms of Traction Alopecia it is best to remove them immediately
and make a plan to follow up with them in a couple weeks. In severe
cases best to contact a dr to assess the situation, is if there is any
open sores they may need antibiotics to prevent any infections.
Excess Hair Loss
Excess Hair Loss can happen also with menopause, new medications and after pregnancy.
Menopause and hair loss – the reason you get excess hair loss here is the Estrogen and Progesterone level fall during menopause, meaning the effects of the androgen (male hormone) are increased. During and after menopause, the hair can become thinner and finer.
This process causes the hair follicles to shrink and the hair starts to grow more slowly, the hair can become a lot weaker and fall out more easily. If you notice a drastic change in your clients hair natural shed, open up the discussion around this and suggest a break from
extensions while their hormones balance out.
